      Adrien E. Bessette, 74

      KILLINGLY - Adrien Edward Bessette, 74, of 50 Williams St., Danielson died Saturday at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam after being stricken at home.
      He was the tax collector for this town from 1965, adding the Borough of Danielson to his responsibilities in 1975 and serving in the dual posts until 1980, when he retired.

      He leaves his wife, Rose A. (Barrette) Bessette; a son, Adrien D. Bessette of Danielson; a daughter, Doris B. Bessette of Danielson; and a brother, Bernard Bessette of Brooklyn.

      Born in Brooklyn, he was a son of Oliver J. and Marie (LaBarre) Bessette. His family moved to Danielson when he was a boy.

      He majored in public administration, business and finance at the University of Connecticut and University of Hartford.

      RAN CLOTHING STORE

      He and his wife ran Shumway's Clothing Store on Main Street for 25 years, from 1947.

      Mr. Bessette served 20 years with the Army National Guard and was a recruiting officer during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member of the Pachaug Outdoor Club, the Killingly Rifle Club and the Mohegan Rifle League.
      He was a probation officer for Killingly and a deputy sheriff for Windham County. He was a lieutenant with the fire police of Danielson Fire Department.
      Mr. Bessette was a former chairman of the Danielson Merchants Bureau and former assistant secrertary of Killingly-Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. He was a former chairman of the legislative committee of Connecticut Tax Collector's Association.

      He was a former exalted ruler of the Danielson Lodge of Elks and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

      He was an usher for St. James Church 32 years. He held the Bronze Pelican Award given by the Diocese of Norwich for 30 years of service to Boy Scouting.

      FUNERAL SERVICE

      The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today from Gagnon-Costello Funeral Home, 33 Reynolds St., Danielson with a Mass at 11 in St. James Church, Franklin Street, Danielson. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Danielson.
