Sudden Death of Mrs. Luther Bassett

Wife of Well Known Scranton Musician and Conductor
Passes Away in Her Sleep
Scranton, Pa., Feb. 19. – On Saturday, January 26, Celina Phillips, beloved wife of Prof. Luther Bassett, the well known choir director, departed this life in her sleep. Her health for many years had been waning, and to conserve her strength it was her custom to rest in the morning after her husband had left for his daily work. When Mr. Bassett returned at noon that day he was shocked to discover that his beloved wife had passed away. Mrs. Bassett is survived by her husband and four sisters: Mrs. Ely Harris, Margaret, Ruth, and Martha Phillips; two brothers, William J. and Rhys J. Phillips, and an aunt, Mrs. Mary Morgan Ayers, and several nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Phillips. Our departed sister was a faithful member of the Ebenezer Welsh Presbyterian Church, and she loved her church will all her heart.
On Tuesday afternoon, January 29, a large concourse of friends assembled in her late home, 1119 Washburn Street, to pay their tribute of love and affection. The Revs. R. J. Williams and Dr. T. Telfion Richards conducted the memorial service. A male quartet, Harry Evans and John T. Jones of Scranton, and John Watkins and Edward Lanyon, of Taylor, sang very effectively “Come Unto Me” and “We’ll Never Say Goodbye in Heaven.” Interment was in Forest Hill cemetery.
The Rev. R. J. Williams said of the deceased: “Our hearts were gripped with a great grief when we learned of the sudden departure of Mrs. Bassett; not that her departure was entirely unexpected, for we were cognizant of her physical infirmity, but that the call came to her in such an hour of such pathetic solitude. Mrs. Bassett, though in the bonds of physical infirmities, possessed a disciplined and cultured soul, and she reveled in the realm of music, particularly sacred music. With her liquid, mellow alto voice she sang the Lord’s songs in the sanctuary, worshipped God and enriched the service. While her place among us will be strangely vacant, we thank God for her, and for the fragrance of her memory. The Lord gave, the Lord hath taken away; blessed by the name of the Lord. A Friend.
