      MARRIAGE: James M Cruikshank married Ann Eliza Bassett dau of Russell in Salem, Washington, New York on 31 May 1838. (From: Marriage Notices of Washington County, New York Newspapers, 1799 - 1880; by Mary S. Jackson & Edward F Jackson. FHL 974.749 V2j; Page: 278.) [Note. There is a discrepancy between this copy of the marriage notice and the date shown on Jeffrey's entry above. Both quote the same reference.]

      NOTE: A reference by Asa Fitch indicates that a "Daughter of Russel Basset married Peter Crookshank Jr., farmer. Peter is the son of Peter & Margaret (Mc Murray) Crookshank. “He lived on the S. W. Half of his father’s farm. They had several children, James A. Wevriely?” The Fitch Gazetteer Annotated Index to the Manuscript History of Washington County, New York; Volume 3. (Micrifilm reference No.: 1430) Available at the Bancroft Public Library, Salem, New York. [Copy in possession of igb.] Dr. Fitch apparently got two of the sons of Peter Cruikshank mixed up The marriage note above shows James M. Cruikshank as the husband of Ann Eliza Bassett, the daughter of Russell Bassett. Peter Cruikshank Jr. married Elizabeth McKnight.

      CENSUS: Ann Eliza Bassett is accounted for in the Russell Bassett household in the 1820 & 1830 censusses. She is apparently in the James Cruikshank household in the 1840 Census and by the name Analiza, in 1850, and as Ann E in the James Cruikshank household in the 1860 & 1870 Censusses of Salem, Washington, New York.       WILL: The will of Ann Eliza (Bassett) Cruikshank was proved 24 May 1886. The will was written 24 Jan 1874 with a Codicil added 15 Nov 1878:
      I Ann Eliza Cruikshank widow of James M. Cruikshank late of Salem ... declare this my last Will and Testament....
      I give ... to Ella Cruikshank daughter of Robert Cruikshank of Salem the sum of one thousand dollars.
      I give ... unto my executor hereinafter named in trust for the use profit of my nephew Charles B[assett] Seaver ... the sum of five hundred dollars & in case the said Charles shall die & all or any part of the ... five hundred dollars shall remain unexpended I direct said Robert to pay over the same to May Eliza Cruikshank the wife of said Robert & in case of her decease to the children of the said May Eliza. I give ... unto my niece May Eliza Cruikshank ... all the residue of my estate real & personal situate in Salem or elsewhere ....
      I hereby nominate & appoint Robert Cruikshank the husband of my niece May Eliza Cruikshank executor of this my last Will & Testament....
      In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 24th day of January ... 1874.

      CODICIL:
      Whereas I Ann Eliza Cruikshank widow of James M. Cruikshank, late of Salem ... made my last Will & Testament in writing dated the 24th day of January 1874 in the which I gave ... unto my executor Robert Cruikshank named in said will in trust for the use and benefit of my nephew Charles B. Seaver the sum of five hundred dollars. Now therefor I do by this my writing ... order ... that the sum of five hundred dollars be paid to May Eliza Cruikshank the wife of said Robert Cruikshank and not to the said Charles B. Seaver... and that so much of the said last Will & Testament that relates to the legacy of the said Charles B. Seaver is hereby revoked.
      In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this fifteenth day of November 1878....
