      Dr. Frieda Bass Griffin

      Dr. Frieda Bass Griffin, 77, passed away at her home in Bristol, Va., on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Lebanon, Va., and had lived most of her life in Bristol. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Viola Hughes Bass of Bristol, Va.;and her brother, Kenneth Bass of Salt Lake City, Utah. She was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church where she played the piano and organ and directed the bell choir for over 15 years. She was in much demand as a concert pianist and played for many events, soloists, weddings and funerals. She was a graduate of V.I. College with a degree in music and was presented a doctor of music degree by Emmanuel Baptist Seminary of Shelby, North Carolina. For many years, she managed her own business, Frieda's Eel Skins, and worked along side her husband in the family businesses. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dr. Bobby F. Griffin;two sons, David Griffin and his wife Kim, of Knoxville, and Danny Griffin and his wife Suzy, of Bristol, Va.;four grandchildren, Lauren Griffin and her husband Jamey Rector, Reagan Griffin, Taylor Griffin, and Logan Griffin, all of Bristol, Va.;two great-grandchildren, Roman and Jaylen Griffin;the Griffin's Korean "daughter" Suzy Suh of Dallas, Tex.;an aunt, Lois Carter of Gate City, Va.;and several nieces and nephews of Salt Lake City, Utah.

      The family would like to extend their special gratitude to Vicki Lowe, who was Frieda's constant companion for the past few months, Mary Ray, and nurses of Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia. The family requests the honor of your presence to celebrate the life of Frieda Griffin at 2 o'clock p.m. Thursday afternoon, January 16, 2014, at State Street United Methodist Church, 300 West Valley Drive, Bristol, Va. The Reverend Clarence "Sonny" Dishman will officiate, and Dr. Bobby Griffin will deliver the eulogy. Special music will be provided by soloist Suzy Suh, accompanist Pam Tilley, and the Abingdon United Methodist Church Choir under the direction of Glenn Patterson. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church parlor. The private committal service and burial will follow the visitation. Sons and grandchildren will serve at pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Rotary Club of Bristol - Noon.
