Rita Corrine Koshiway
Rita Corrine Koshiway passed from this life on June 22, 2023, at the age of 71 in Oklahoma city, Oklahoma.
Rita was born on March 28, 1952, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of George and Martha (Bassett) Koshiway. Rita grew up and attended school in Red Rock, Oklahoma, raised by her maternal grandparents Joe and Genevieve Bassett. She moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma during high school, graduating Classen High School with the Class of 1970 during that same year Rita was the Otoe-Missouri Tribal Encampment Princess. Following high school Rita worked at Woody's Candy and Bipo and retired due to health issues from Best Thrift Store and was named employee of the year in 2022.
Rita loved being around family and friends, playing bingo and going to the casino. Most of all Rita always looked forward to the Pow-Wows and loved to dance. Rita will always loved to cook for everyone.
Rita is survived by by four children Shelly Nimsey of Midwest City, Oklahoma, Travis Nimsey of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Renita Harjo of Cherokee, North Carolina, Rebecca Mendoza of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, two brothers Deswood Koshiway and his wife Louella of Del City, Oklahoma, George Koshiway of Red Rock, Oklahoma; two sisters Diane Koshiway of Midwest City, Oklahoma, Victoria Koshiway of Shawnee, Oklahoma; two aunts Mary Howry of Red Rock, Oklahoma, Linda Francis of Red Rock, Oklahoma; special friend Kathy (Homeratha) Shawnee of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents Rita was preceded in death by her brother Jerome Koshiway, niece Lalita Leib, nephew Leonard Koshiway, maternal grandparents Joe and Genevieve (Littlecrow) Bassett and a uncle G.K. Bassett.
Evening meal will be held 5:00 pm, Saturday June 24, 2023, with Prayer services to follow at 7:00 pm at the Otoe-Missouria Tribal Cultural Building. 12:00 pm, Sunday, June 25, 2023, traditional feast and give away will also be held at the Otoe-Missouria Tribal Cultural Building. Graveside services will be held in the Otoe-Missouria Cemetery at Red Rock, Oklahoma. Poteet Funeral Home and Cremation Services will be handling the arrangements. Pallbearers will include Issac Harjo, Isaiah, Harjo, Dustin Francis, Brian Scott, Shawn Franklin, Ruben Mendoza, Sr. Honorary pallbearers will be Travis Nimsey, Russell Koshiway, Ruben Mendoza, Jr., J.J. Koshiway, Raul Mendoza, Ivan Arkeketa, Gary Franklin, Jalen Arkeketa, Micheal Spottedwolf and Perry Gould.
