- He moved to Wichita, Kansas to live with his father and new step-mother in 1941. He graduated from Wichita East High School in 1954 and then attended Wichita State University for three semesters before dropping out and working at various jobs. He joined the US Army in 1958 and became part of the Medical Corps. He trained for and worked in a psychiatric section at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He was discharged in 1960. He returned to studies at WSU as an electrical engineering student while working fulltime at Kansas Gas & Electric Company. He graduated with a BSEE degree in 1966. He took a job doing computer simulation of military missiles with Martin-Orlando. After two years he accepted a better offer from Lockheed Electronics at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. He worked for them ten years as a contractor to NASA. He then accepted a job with a small computer company in Houston called Modular Data Systems and became VP of Engineering and a member of the board of directors with MDSi. The company was sold to Amoco Oil in 1989 and he became and Amoco employee. Amoco restructured in 1994 and Gary took an early retirement offer. He returned to work in the space program with Northrup-Grumman.
