Walter W. Bassett
Walter Woolsey Bassett, 98, of Wilton died Dec. 27 at Norwalk Hospital. He was the son of Walter and Edna Swift Bassett. He was born in Stratford, and had lived in Wilton since 1923. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Smith Bassett, in 1992. He had a long career in banking. He was vice president of the National Bank of Norwalk, which became The Union Trust Company and today is the Wachovia Bank. He worked there from 1928 until his retirement in 1969.
During his many years in Wilton he was active in town. He joined the Wilton Congregational Church in 1924 and was the longest living member of that church at the time of his death. He served the church as a deacon, chairman of the deacons, on building, cemetery and search committees, and was treasurer for about 20 years. He was president of the Bald Hill Cemetery Association for many years and was a past master of the Cannon Grange.
He was a member of The Sons of the American Revolution and had traced his family origins back to Thomas Bassett, who came to the United States in 1635.
Among his other interests he enjoyed gardening, stamp collecting, chess and genealogy.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Arthur Krenz of Middlefield, a son and daughter-in-law, Truman and Elizabeth Bassett of Trumbull; two sisters, Marion Timmins and Ruth Bassett of Wilton; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Norman A. Bassett of Midland, Texas. A memorial service took place Dec. 30 at the Wilton Congregational Church. Interment was private. Memorial contributions can be made to the Wilton Congregational Church, 70 Ridgefield Road, Wilton 06897. The Bouton
