Terry Jan Bass, 71, passed away peacefully on September 4th, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, family, and dedication. Born in North Carolina, Terry was raised in the Cradock area of Portsmouth, where he took great pride in being a Cradock Admiral. His passion for sports, which began in his youth, carried into his adult life as he played travel softball, coached his children?s teams, and remained an avid fan throughout his life.
Terry was predeceased by his father, Addie Floyd Bass, his mother, Mina Grey Bass, and his brother, Floyd Elwood Bass. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of many years, Sonja Bass, who was his steadfast companion through all of life?s adventures. He also leaves behind his three beloved children: Shawn Bass (Heather), Justin Bass (Justine), and Lauren McClintock (Andy). Terry was a proud and doting grandfather to seven grandchildren: Gage Bass, Rachel Bass, Landon Bass, AJ McClintock, Evie McClintock, Curren Bass, and Isla Bass, all of whom were the light of his life.
Terry dedicated over 34 years of his life working in civil service, including roles at Naval Station Norfolk and with the Army Corps of Engineers. His strong work ethic eventually led him to become the proud owner of Bass Grading and Tractor Services, where he continued his love for operating heavy equipment while serving the community he cherished.
Terry found joy in life?s simple pleasures, whether on annual hunting trips in the mountains, spending time at his second home in the Outer Banks, NC, or camping for two weeks each year with family at Kerr Lake, a cherished tradition he held dear.
A memorial service to celebrate Terry?s life will be held on Monday, September 9, 2024, at 11 am at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd Chapel.
His warmth, dedication to family, and passion for life will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
