NEW BEDFORD ? Robert J. Bessette, 75, of New Bedford passed away Friday, September 29, 2017 at St. Luke?s Hospital in New Bedford after a period of declining health. He was the husband of 29 years, to Lorraine (Brothers) Bessette and the late Patricia (Schmitt) Bessette.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Lionel J. Bessette and Aurore (Arsenault) Charles, he was a lifelong resident of the city. Bob served in the U.S.Navy during the Vietnam War and then joined the Army where he served for 22 years retiring as a Staff Sergeant.
A self-employed carpenter he was the owner operator of Bob Bessette Builders. He was an active member of the New Bedford Moses Lodge #914 since 2009 where he served as a Governor, Treasurer and Chaplain. He was also a member of the Sixth Bristol Club and enjoyed woodworking.
He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Lori J. Merolla and her companion Kenneth Reno of Assonet, Emile Rego and her husband Bruce of New Bedford and Lynn A. Bessette of New Bedford; a son, Michael R. Bessette and his wife Candice of Acushnet; 11 grandchildren, Mark McCra, Jr., Kyle McCra, Logan Dardinski, Brandon Varley, Juliana Rego, James Sylvia, Brianna Santos, and Timothy, Michael, Hollie and Catherine Bessette; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Dennis Bessette and his wife Corrine of FL; four sisters, Lorraine LeBlanc of RI, Doris Phillips of MI, Diane Brodo of Dartmouth and Lea Gregorio of Fairhaven; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Bessette was the father of the late Thomas L. Bessette, step father of the late Anthony Carlesi and brother of the late Donald, Frank and James R. Bessette.
Calling hours are Wednesday from 4-7pm in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven with a service at 7:00pm. A graveside service with military honors will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at a time to be announced.
