NEWFIELDS - Shirley Caraway Bassett, 85, of Newfields, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family on Dec. 8, 2012.
She was born in Exeter on May 5, 1927, the daughter of the late Laurence Caraway and Hazel McMaster of Epping.
The widow of her beloved Charles Joseph Bassett, who died in April, 2012, she is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Spence of Naples, Fla.; four sons, Charles Jr. of Freeport, Bahamas; Thomas of Newfields; Stephen of Newfields; and Jon of North Hampton.
She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Daniel Chick, Christopher Cote, Kerri Townsend, Jamie Cote, Michelle Kendrick, Charles J. Bassett III, Elisabeth Bassett, Jon Bassett Jr., William Bassett, Charlene Hewitt, Talia Bassett, Thomas Bassett Jr., Madison Bassett; and 14 great-grandchildren, who will all greatly miss their Nana.
Shirley was the oldest of four siblings and is survived by two siblings, brother, Laurence Caraway Jr. of Epsom; sister, Thelma Nelson of Fort Meyers,
Fla.; and was predeceased by her brother, Wayne Caraway of Epping.
Shirley and late husband Charles raised their family in North Hampton, from 1963-1990 and in retirement built their dream home in Newfields, and remained there until 2009. As members of the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association (NHSA), they shared a love of snowmobiling. Both Shirley and Charles enjoyed traveling, fulfilling a lifetime wish of traveling to Alaska in 2003.
In addition, she was a member of the VFW <http://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/vfw/?personid=161640390&affiliateID=2373> Ladies Auxiliary in North Hampton, for many years.
The last few years of Shirley's life were spent in Naples, Fla., with her husband, where they were cared for by her daughter Cheryl Spence, granddaughter Jamie Cote, and family, before moving back to Newfields in 2012. She spent the final months of her life in New Hampshire, where she lived with family and shared a special bond with her wonderful caretakers, Rhonda Kelsen of Newfields, and Kati LaPointe of Barrington, who were assisted by Beacon Hospice in Portsmouth.
The true definition of a matriarch, Shirley was looked up to and loved by all of her growing family. She'll be remembered as a loving, family-centric woman, who would do anything in support of her family. Although she will be missed dearly by family and friends, we take comfort in that she's reunited with the love of her life and husband of 64 years, Charles Bassett.
Services: Visiting hours will be at Brewitt Funeral Home in Epping, on Thursday, Dec. 13, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services and burial will be held at the N.H. State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, on Friday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the United Church of Christ, North Hampton Youth Missions Group.
