John K. Bassett
John K. Bassett, 75, of LaPorte, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in Fort Collins. A prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Allnutt Funeral Service/Drake Road Chapel. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the chapel. John Bassett was born Dec. 27, 1924, in Hastings, Neb., to Arthur Louis Bassett and Gladys Rynearson Bassett. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1942. He received a business degree from Long Island University in1960. He married Frances Shofner on Oct. 9, 1946, in Clovis, N.M. A former resident of Altus, Okla., he lived in LaPorte since 1974. Mr. Bassett was colonel and command pilot with the U.S. Air Force for 31 years. He was a member of the Retired Air Force Association. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and hiking. Survivors include his wife, Frances Bassett of LaPorte; three sons, John Bassett Jr. and Joseph Bassett, both of Boothbay, Maine, and Patrick Bassett of Golden; one daughter, Colleen Bassett of California; five brothers, Vern Bassett, Harold Bassett and Howard Bassett, all of Hastings, Robert Bassett of Santa Ynez, Calif., and Donald Bassett of Ridgecrest, Calif.; two sisters, Dorese Willis or Rupert, Idaho, and Mary Mazur of New Hampshire and two grandchildren. His parents and one brother, Roger Bassett, preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of Allnutt Funeral Service.
