NANCY L. Bassett, 84, died peacefully at the Cedars Nursing Home in Portland, Maine, due to age related causes on February 19, 2009. Nancy lived in North Syracuse, New York with her husband of 58 years, Robert E. Bassett, Jr. until his death in June 2005. Nan was born in Piittsburgh, PA, to John and Mary Piper and was valedictorian of the University of Pittsburgh Class of 1945. After raising five children, while moving through several towns in Pennsylvania, New York and Maine, she renewed her credentialing in education and worked as a substitute teacher in the Waterville, ME school department. She even taught a year at a local Catholic Academy and joked that they didn't encourage her, a Methodist, to teach catechism. She laughed at the confusion when the students addressed her as Mother Bassett, stating that she was indeed mother to five children at home and the title was permissible. Upon moving to Syracuse in 1972, she taught nursery school for many years and was very active at Northminister Presbyterian Church. She shared her many talents in arts and crafts for church functions and was a fixture in the church choir with her beautiful soprano voice. Nan is survived by her five children and their families; John (Jack) Bassett of Rome, ME.; William Bassett and Albert Robinson of Stoneham, MA; Susan and Ray Nadeau of Windham, ME; Lynn B Nash of Portland, ME; Sandra and Richard Boyd of Cary, NC; grandchildren Vanessa, Kristopher, Erin, Kyle and Ricky, great-grandchildren, Megan, Ashley, Arianna, Erilynne, and sisters-in-law and their families; Claire Hammett of Vero Beach, FL; Gayle Schurko and husband Michael of Bethel Park, PA; and Elaine Pell of Chesterton, IN. A Memorial service will be held at the Northminister Presbyterian Church, 7444 Buckley Road, North Syracuse, NY, on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at 4:00 PM, the Reverend Karen Dimon officiating. Interment of both Robert and Nancy Bassett to be in Bethel Cemetery in Bethel, PA. Her family wishes to thank the outstanding support and care of the Cedars and Hospice staff who made Nan feel at home. Contributions to honor her memory may be made to the Building Fund at Northminister Presbyterian Church, the Cedars, or to a charity of one's choice. Send condolences at post-gazette.com/gb
