Mr. R. G. Bassett, F.J.I.
Provincial journalism has sustained a loss through the death of Mr. Robert George Bassett at his home, Littlecroft, Farningham, Kent.
Mr. Bassett, who was in his 78th year, had since 1906 been managing director of the Kentish District Times Co., Ltd., which was founded by his father, the late Mr. Rowland George Bassett, in 1881, and managing editor of the Kentish Time series of newspapers. He was also chairman and managing director of the Lewisham Newspaper Co., Ltd.
A Charter member of the Institute of Journalists, on the council of which he represented Kent for 20 years, Mr. Bassett was in 1920 elected a Fellow of the Institute in recognition of his services to the Institute and to journalism. He had also been President of the Kent District of the Institute, and chairman of the Kent branch of the Newspaper Society, of which he was treasurer at the time of his death.
He was the second eldest member of the Shirley Woolmer Lodge of Freemasons (Sidcup).
