ELKHART - Raymond F. Bassett, 76, of 1832 St. James Place, died at 12:17 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 19, 2006) at home.
He was born May 8, 1929, to James and Jane (Bardette) Bassett in Los Angeles. He married Dorothy Haajes on Jan. 24, 1953, in Shelby, Mich. She died on March 8, 1977. He married Devona "Dee" Miller on Oct 28, 1982, in Las Vegas.
She survives along with two daughters, Barbara A. Belt of Champaign, Ill., and Sherry M. Grise of Joplin, Mo.; four sons, Charles R. Bassett of Hawaii, Douglas A. Bassett of Champaign, Ill., Steven J. Bassett of Clifford, Mich., and Kevin L. Miller of Elkhart; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nora Carrico and Rene Simon.
Friends may call two hours prior to a 2 p.m. service Thursday at Hartzler-Gutemuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 W. Franklin St., with Rev. Lee Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery.
Mr. Bassett founded Parkwood Homes Inc., in 1964. Under his direction, the company became a public held corporation in 1977 and included subsidiaries of Monterey Homes, B&J Woodcraft in Elkhart, Oxford Homes in Middlebury, Parkwood Homes in Moultrie, Ga., and Mt. Joy, Penn. He sold his interests in 1981 and started a private mobile home and RV consulting business.
He was a member of Leesburg Christian Center in Leesburg, Fla., and attended New Hope United Methodist Church in Elkhart. He was a life member of Christiana Country Club.
