Aldege Bessette, Retired Planning Head at Armory
Aldege J. Bessette, 66, of 184 Walnut St., Agawam, died in his home Monday night after a long illness. He was born and educated in Agawam. Son of the late Pierre and Rosalie (Jasmin) Bessette, he had been a life-time resident of the town. He was a retired employee of the Springfield Armory, beginning there as a messenger boy 51 years ago. He retired in September, 1955, as chief of the production planning department. He was a member of St. Therese’s Church and of its Holy Name Society, and was retired treasurer of the 20-Year Club of the Springfield Armory.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Emma (Gauthier) Bessette; one son, Albert J., of Agawam; two sisters, Mrs. Ovelene Dufresne of West Springfield and Mrs. Joseph Elroy of Agawam; one step-brother, Moses Bessette of Agawam; three step-sisters, Mrs. Elise Gosselin of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Louise Dwyer of Springfield and Sister Mary Edith of the Presentation of Mary Order, Canada. The funeral will be held at R.D. Toomey funeral home Thursday at 9 a.m. with a solemn high mass of requiem in St. Teresa’s Church, Agawam, at 10.
Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery. Visiting hours will be today and Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 10.
