Douglas Richard Bass
November 2, 1954 ? May 30, 2025
Douglas Richard Bass, lovingly known as "Papa", passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2025, at the age of 70, surrounded by the love of his devoted family. Many years ago Doug lost a kidney while helping assist his co-workers. He later developed kidney disease and endured years of dialysis, both outpatient and at home. He also underwent a liver transplant in 2021. So, needless to say, Doug was one tough cookie. Through all this, his wife Paula never left his side, nor did his sons and many grandchildren, all of whom, he loved so very much.
Doug was born on November 2, 1954, to the late Delbert and Frances (McMannamy) Bass. A 1973 graduate of Clay High School, Doug built a life defined by hard work, love, and dedication to others.
On Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1978, he married the love of his life, Paula (Baron), in Long Beach, California. Their marriage of 46 years was a shining example of commitment, love, and family values.
Doug worked for General Dynamics in California before moving back to Toledo in 1979, where he dedicated 34 years to Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital (NOPH Hospital).
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Paula; his sons, Dylan (Denise), Phillip (Nicki), and Corey (Jennifer); his grandchildren, Ava Jane Bass, Jesah Bass, Dain Bass, Foster Bass, Aniston Bass, and Bianca (Jet) Blackburn; and his great-grandson, Shepard Blackburn.
He is also survived by his sister Roxanna Logsdon, his brother Walter E. "Butch" Bass, brothers-in-law Glen V. Baron and Douglas Baron, sister-in-law Pamela Krisher and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Doug devoted himself to his family and community. He coached Pee Wee baseball at Heatherdowns Park for 15 years and took pride in coaching all three of his sons. He also served as Committee Chairman for Arlington School Boy Scouts Pack 66.
He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Detroit Tigers, and NASCAR racing.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Frances; his brothers, Carl Bass and Greg Bass.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their care and support and asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Doug's honor.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 from 3:00pm to 7:00 pm at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S Reynolds Rd, with a memorial service beginning at 7:00 pm.
