Harrel Andrew Bass
Harrel Andrew Bass of Alvin, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2026, at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jordan Andrew Bass and Essie Gladys Hambrick Miller; his infant son, Michael Andrew Bass; and his beloved wife of 66 years, Barbara Mitchell Bass. Harrel is survived by his brother Willard Bass (Jean), children and their spouses, Jeanie Bass Upshaw (Michael) of Alvin, Texas; Randy Bass (Lisa) of The Woodlands, Texas; and Yvonne Bass Ramsey (Robert) of Richmond, Texas; grandchildren, Lauren Upshaw, Jason Upshaw, Kelly Upshaw, Ashley Galownia, Kelsey Wolfe, Syndey Caldwell, Wezley Bass, Justin Flint and Holly Parks; 21 great-grandchildren; and a large extended family. Harrel was born on October 6, 1932, to Jordan Andrew Bass and Essie Gladys Hambrick Bass in Cayug??a, Texas. He was born during the Great Depression, when his father worked as a sharecropper on his grandfather?s farm. Those early years were difficult, but Harrel often enjoyed telling stories about listening to the Grand Ole Opry on the radio. His childhood in Cayuga and later Medicine Park, Oklahoma, was filled with wonderful memories, even though times remained challenging. In June 1948, Harrel moved to Alvin, Texas. In Alvin, Harrel became involved in sports and excelled at both baseball and football. He was a starting baseball player for the Alvin Yellowjackets and served as editor of the Alvin High School Clarion newspaper. During his senior year, he met Barbara Ann Mitchell, the love of his life and the woman who would become his wife. Harrel and Barbara were married on September 1, 1952.The day after graduating from high school, Harrel began working for R&M Drilling Company. He went on to work for several drilling companies as a Mud Engineer, including Milwhite and Phillips Petroleum. During his years in the drilling industry, he was involved in several well-known big-rig blowouts and worked alongside legendary firefighter Red Adair & Boots & Coots to help extinguish the fires. Harrel loved his years in the drilling industry and had many stories to share about working offshore. During this time, the family made their home in both Texas and Louisiana. In 1967, Harrel began working for Monsanto Chemical Company in the Utilities Department as an operator. He worked his way up to Day Foreman and was later promoted to oversee the new Sorbic unit, a process Monsanto brought over from Japan. He remained with Monsanto until November 1985, when he accepted an early retirement package at the age of 53.Retirement gave Harrel more time to enjoy the things he loved. His days were filled with golf, the stock market?at which he excelled?and, most importantly, time with his grandchildren. When Barbara retired in 1991, the couple decided to return to Alvin, where they built their final home. Harrel was a devout Christian, a member of South Park Baptist Church, and served as a deacon. He loved his family dearly and lived his life as an example to others, always offering encouragement, love, and support. The family would like to thank the staff of Silverbelle Assisted Living in Richmond, Texas for the love and care they showed our dad while he was in their care. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to South Park Baptist Church in Alvin. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM ? 11:00 AM Monday, August 31, 2026 at Scott Funeral Home with services beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Oak Park Cemetery in Alvin.
