DRAKESVILLE: M. Marlene Bassett, 81, of Drakesville, Iowa died December 29, 2013 at the Bloomfield Care Center in Bloomfield, Iowa. She was born November 28, 1932 in Mystic, Iowa to Simon and Leanore McCarty Haines. She married Bill Bassett August 22, 1952 in Drakesville. He preceded her in death February 8, 2013. Mary was a homemaker and had worked at Clearview Animal Hospital in Bloomfield. She was a 50-year-member of the Order of Eastern Star and was affiliated with the Drakesville United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, and spending winters in Texas with her husband.
She is survived by her daughter, Jana (Vern) Bassett Walker of Moulton, Iowa; Jeff (Shelly) Bassett, Jay (Betsy) Bassett both of Bloomfield; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Judy Robbins of Camdenton, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, Bill Haines.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. John D. Boatman officiating. Burial will be at the Drakesville Cemetery in Drakesville, Iowa. Visitation will begin after 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday with Eastern Star services at 1:00 p.m. followed by family visitation until 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials have been established to the Drakesville Betterment Committee and to the Drakesville United Methodist Church.
