James Howard Bass

James Howard Bass, 76, of Helena, MS, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, at his residence. He was born May 3, 1940 in Lumberton, NC to the late James Howard Bass, Sr. and Mary Bass. James served in the U.S. Navy. After the navy, he went to work at Ingalls Shipbuilding where he was voted the Outside Machinists Union Steward for 20 years. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He loved his church family and never met a stranger. He always had a story or joke to tell, and never failed to ask you how your family was doing. In his spare time, he loved to read his Bible, go the library, drink coffee, and cook breakfast for his family.
In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his sister, Sylvia (Chuck) Fox; mother-in-law, Ernestine Stull; and sister-in-law, Gerri King.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, JoAnn Bass; children, Anissa (Tim) Maples, David Bass, Jennifer Bass Shields, and Joy (Marc) Renfro; grandchildren, Morgan Maples, Dylan Renfro, Taylor Maples, Blake Renfro, Shelby Shields, Ragan Bass, and Blair Renfro; great-grandchildren, Noah and Nolan; brother, Michael (Phyllis) Bass; sisters, Kim Bass (Ed) Parsons and Beth (Ray) Matthieu; nieces, Emily and Kara; nephew, James; sister-in-law, Sandra Little; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
Visitation for James will be Friday, April 7, 2017 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home in Moss Point, MS. Military Honors will be conducted at 6:30pm by the U.S. Navy. The memorial service will begin at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Archie Holley, Rev. Marlon Carmeans, Rev. Chuck Overby, and Rev. Bob Savell officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Mercy House Ministries, 21701 County Home Rd. Moss Point, MS, 39562, in memory of Mr. Bass.
