- 3B3. Thomas Bassett, son of Thomas and Joanna Bassett, was born in 1660 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He died before 7 Feb 1737 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut. He married Sarah Baldwin, daughter of John and Mary (Bruce) Baldwin, in 1686/7. Sarah was born 25 Dec 1655. Thomas resided at Fairfield, Connecticut until 1700. He first appears in Milford, Connecticut in 1703. All of the children listed below were baptized at Milford, Connecticut on 14 Oct 1703.
[This connection to John and Mary (Bruce) Baldwin is put in doubt by Donald Lines Jacobus. (See PARENTAGE note below.)]
PARENTAGE: Donald Lines Jacobus, in his Ackley-Bosworth book disputes the idea that Sarah is the daughter of John Baldwin. "No John Baldwin of Milford had a daughter Sarah available to marry Thomas Bassett. However, Josiah Baldwin by his wife Mercy Camp did have a daughter Sarah born in 1668, of suitable age to be mother of Thomas Bassett's children, none of whom was probably born earlier than 1690. The second Bassett son was named Josiah, which would be for Sarah's father; and the first Bassett daughter was named Mercy, which would be for Sarah's mother, and the second Bassett daughter was named Abigail, which could be for Sarah's sister Abigail. In addition to the evidence of names, it seems entirely possible that the early genealogists of the Bassett family obtained from some family source their statement that Thomas Bassett's wife was Sarah Baldwin, even though they erred in calling her a daughter of a John Baldwin."
