      From: "Friends Minutes, Vermont"
Occasionally the overseers of the Montpelier Meeting had to report an errant member. In 1811, we read from the Overseer's report, "Daniel Bassett, a member of our Society had so fair gone from our principles as to attend a place of diversion and had gone from plainness and neglects attendance of our Meeting - which is directed to Monthly Meeting."

Arthur Henry Hill was born at Isle La Motte on October 30, 1862 and died there on January 7, 1932.

He was a graduate of the University of Vermont in the Class of 1882 and went to New York City where he entered Columbia Law School but on completion of his Law Course decided he was more interested in the field of education and accepted the position of Head Master at the old Cutler School for Boys in New York. On the death of his father henry Clay Hill he returned to the Island to farm.
For nearly seven years prior to his death Mr. Hill was housed-in, having suffered a stroke which paralyzed his legs and he spent his time in writing. He loved the Island and was always much interested in its history.
This manuscript was found by his daughter where it had been secreted for nearly 45 years in his home, the oldest frame house in town - originally a block house, having been built in 1830. She took the writings with all supporting papers to Dr. Frank Emerson Andrews and he was good enough to co-ordinate them as he felt they should be preserved.

      Dayton 0 December 14, 1832

Dear Brother and Sister through the Blessings of Divine providence we are in the land of the living and enjoying tolerable health though we have had considerable sickness in our family this summer. Mr. Bassett has been confine to his room for four months with fever but he has got up so as to be about again once more.

Lucinda Fowler has been very sick with fever but she is better though not able to be about much yet. The rest of our family has enjoyed tolerable health. The cholera has been very bad in Cincinnati upwards of 80 deaths occurred in one day there. It was not cinfined amongst any particular class of people but all classes - the intemperate the most. We have had no cases of it in Dayton yet and we are in hopes that we shall escape it. But it may be here as well as in other places for all that. You requested us to inform you of Allen but we have not heard anything of him since we came to this Country. We had a letter from Chauncy Strong in August last which says we are all well. There has been great revivals here in this place amongst all classes of Denominations of Churches. The Baptist appear to take the lead in Dayton. Samuel Bassett was married in July last to a young lady by the name of Pearsis Smith in Hamilton a town between Dayton and Cincinnati. He has settled in Dayton. Philander Bassett is still single and lives with us. He is clerk here in a store. Amanda is still single and living at home.

We will inform you of our Country. The Temperance Society has been forming all through our State which is doing a great deal of good where ever there is one established. We wish you would write immediately as soon as you receive this. As long as we cannot see one another we have the means to correspond with one another. Please excuse us for not writing to you sooner but we thought that we had answered your last letter until now. But for the future we will be more particular.

No more at present but remain yours until death.

      Columbia Aug 29th 1836

      Dear Sister
We are favored with an opportunity of sending a few lines to you by one of our nearest neighbors that is coming into the Country to see his friends and will call and see you if he can. He is Brother to Mr. Hall of the South Island. We will give you some account of our family. David Bassett has been very unwell with inflamation of the kidneys which alarmed us very much but he is on the mend at present. I was taken with a fever which kept me confined to the room for two or three weeks but am better.
Philander was married in July to a Miss Clark. He has been very unwell for some time, part of the time confined to the house. The rest of our family is in tolerable health at present. We now live in Kentucky on the Bank of Ohio three miles above Cincinnati opposite Columbia. Myranda lost her husband he died with cholera three years ago. She has since married a man by the name of Conklin. He lives in Columbia. We have rec’d two letters from Jesse A. Clark the last we got was in April last. They was in tolerable health. We have had two letters from Horace Hill. He lives in the Michigan Ter. We will give you some account of the crops in this Country. Wheat is very good in Ohio and Kentucky. Corn is as good as for several years back and all other crops are very good & bringing good prices. Wheat is 75 cents to 1.00 per bushel. Corn 37 ½ to 40 cts Pork was 6 to $8.00 pr hundred pounds last winter beef is on the decline now. It is a very good time for farmers in this Country. Everything they raise brings a good price at home.
We will give you some account of Salome. She has lost her second husband he died the first of May 1835. She still remains a widow and lives in Cincinnati. We will now draw to a close. Give our respects to all inquiring friends.

We remain yours respectfully David & Sophia Bassett

Our fall election is coming on and it is something that interests us all. General Harrison is the man the people in this Country is supporting unanimously and it is hopeful that the friends in the East will not neglect the Old pioneer of the West. We are personally acquainted with the Character of Genl. Harrison and we find him well qualified to fill the office for which the people are supporting him.

Yours until Death David & Sophia Bassett
