Heart Patient Dies Paying Hospital Fee
DUNN ? Country Storekeeper Perry Almons Bass, 58, went to Betsey Johnson Memorial Hospital here Tuesday night long enough to be given a heart stimulant.
Dr. Bill Lilly, the physician on call, wanted him to enter the hospital, but Bass said he would return in a day or so and wanted to go home.
As he stopped to pay his $4 treatment fee, he suffered a critical seizure. The nurse at the desk was making out a receipt as he slumped. In five minutes he was dead.
Bass was operator of a small store on the Newton Grove Road..
He had gone to the hospital because of pains in his arm and chest. Dr. Lilly administered a shot, but Bass was anxious to return home.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Maple Grove Church, conducted by the Rev. J.A. Martinson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Muriel Lee Bass; four sons, Ellistine Bass and Dickey Bas, both of Dunn, Rt. 2, Beryl Joyce Bass of Hope Wells, Va., Perry Bass Jr., Trezose, Pa.; five brothers, Marvin Bass of Norfolk, Va., Ballard and Weldon of Clinton, Junior Bass, Albany, Ga., Edgar Bass of Newton Grove; two sisters, Mrs. Reba Aman of Clinton and Mrs. Fronia Bass of Albany, five grandchildren.
