June 14, 2005 Robert E. "Bob" Bassett, 83, died peacefully on Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital after a long battle with cancer. A 33-year resident of North Syracuse, he was an active parishioner at Northminster Presbyterian Church, where his tireless energy reflected his love and committment to friends whom he considered his extended family. Bob was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Robert E. and Marion Robb Bassett, and was an alumnus of the University of Pittsburgh. A veteran of WWII, he served in the 452nd AA/AW battalion of the U.S. Army's coast artillery guard. He was a decorated officer who commanded an anti-aircraft unit in Europe, where he participated in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. After his marriage to Nancy Piper, also of Pittsburgh, his career in retail sales and management took them and their growing family to New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maine prior to their arrival in North Syracuse. He remained busy in retirement, focusing on volunteer work based in his community, where he was a 50-year member of Corlandville Lodge #470 of the Masonic Fraternity of New York, and his church, where he served as an elder, trustee, choir member, worship team member and in many leadership capacities. He was an accomplished artist and craftsman who enjoyed sharing these skills through gifts from his woodworking shop to family, friends and charities. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Bassett of North Syracuse; his five children; and their families, John (Jack) and Dixie Bassett of Rome, ME, William Bassett and Albert Robinson of Stoneham, MA, Susan and Raymond Nadeau of Windham, ME, Lynn B. and Linn S.
