      William Marvin Bass Jr.

      William Marvin Bass Jr., bears a name that has been an honored one in Virginia educational history, and in the few years since his admission to the bar he has given the name some additional distinction in connection with the practice of law attaunton.
      Mr. Bass was born in Campbell County, Virginia, August 20, 1901, son of William M. and Bernice (Hughes) Bass, and grandson of William Bassett Charles Hughes. William Bass was born in Chesterfield County, Virginia, and for about forty years praciced medicine at Lynchburg. Charles Hughes served as a Confederate soldier under Lee during the Civil war and was twice wounded.
      William M. Bass, Sr., was born in Chesterfield County, was educated in the New London Academy at Forest and the University of Virginia, and since early manhood his career has been marked out along educational lines. He has been a teacher for ovr thirty years, and is still active in the work as principal of the Fairview Heights School in Lynchburg. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a Democrat, and belongs to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. His wife was born near Alta Vista, Campbell County, and they have three children: William J. Jr., Charles Edward, a graduate of the University of Virginia, who is now an instructor in geology at the university; and J. Wilford, a second year man at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
      William M. Bass Jr., was educated in the New London Academy at Forest, and is an alumnus of the University of Virginia, where he paid his expenses by work in the Bursar?s office, as cashier of the university cafeteria, and though supporting himelf he was one of the very popular members of the student body and also stood high in scholarship. He went to the university with a scholarship from Campbell County. Mr. Bass graduated in 1923, and in 1922 had been licensed to practice law. He has been practicing as an attorney at Staunton for five years, and has an office in the Barristers Row. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club, Knights of Pythias, is a Royal Arch Mason, and member of the Central Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
      He married in June, 1927, Miss Jennie Hicks, of Campbell County, who was educated in the New London Academy and the Virginia Intermont College at Bristol. Her father, Ed Hicks, is a well known Campbell County farmer. They have one son, Williamarvin Bass III, born August 30, 1928.

      Faced With Arrest, Lawyer Kills Self

      Staunton, March 30. ? (AP) Coroner Thomas M. Parkins tonight returned a verdict that William Marvin Bass, 31, Staunton lawyer, who was found in his office shot through the head, died of a ?gunshot would self-inflicted with suicidal intent.?
      Bass was arguing a case in Augusta County Circuit Court when a policeman visited his office to serve a warrant on him. Notified by a friend, the attorney left he courtroom and returned to his office while the officer was temporarily absent. Te policeman returned to find him unconscious from the bullet wound.
      The warrant, which charged that Bass as administrator of the estate of Homer Bronson, ex-service man, misappropriated $3,171.87 in May, 1926, had not been seen by the accused man at the time the fatal shot was fired.

      STAUNTON, VA., March 31 ? (AP) ? Funeral services for William Marvin Bass, 31, Staunton attorney, who took his own life at his office yesterday, will be held from the home tomorrow morning after which the body will be taken to Lynchburg for bural.
