Rev. Walton Needham Bass Sr. 87
DURHAM -- Rev. Walton Needham Bass, Sr., 87, a resident of Croasdaile Village died, June 7, 2008.
He was born in the Rosewood Community near Goldsboro. He graduated from Rosewood High School and attended Kings Business College in Raleigh. He worked as a CPA in Charlotte. He volunteered for the Army with the rank of Staff Sergeant in World War II in the European Theater. He received an AA degree from Louisburg Junior College in 1949.
While at Louisburg, he met Emma Deane Simmons from Burgaw and they married in 1948. He received an AB degree from Woodard College in 1951. He received a BD degree from Duke Divinity School in 1954. He was an elder in the North Carolina Methodist Conference for 19 years serving as minister of several charges. He took a sabbatical and located at Lakewood United Methodist Church for his children to finish high school. He taught fo 17 years in the Durham Schools and retired in 1986 from both from both the school system and the NC Conference of the UMC.
He is preceded in death by his parents, V. Needham Bass and Smithie Elizabeth "Bessie" Herring Bass; four brothers, Eddison Bass of Farmville, DeWitt Bass of Wilmington, Wesley Bass of Rosewood, Milton E. Bass(twin) of Durham, one sister, Smithie Elizabeth "Beth" Olson of Fayetteville.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emma Simmons Bass; his son, W. Needham Bass, Jr and wife, Phyllis King Bass of Durham; grandson, Jonathan Bass of Atlanta, GA. He daughter Smithie Elizabeth Bass Parrish; grandson, Joseph Parrish; granddaughter, Christine Plummber and husband, Barry Plummer; greatgranddaughter, Kiaya Plummer of Lexington; two sisters, Myrtle B. Hodges of Eden, Allene B. Tibbles of Streeter, IL; one brother, Will C. Bass of Raleigh; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 21, 2008 in the William Preston Few Interfaith Chapel at Croasdaile Village. The family will receive friends after the service.
The family extends grateful thanks to the nursing staff of Croasdaile Village who took great care of him.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions to UMRH Foundation of Croasdale Village, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Durham, NC 27707, for the Benevolent Fund.
