Dewitt Gray Bass
Dewitt Gray Bass, Dewitt Gray Bass of Wilmington, NC, died Tuesday, October 22, 2002, at home.
He was born May 6, 1911, in Goldsboro, NC, son of the late Valasco Needham Bass and Smithie Elizabeth Herring Bass.
Dewitt grew up in Goldsboro, NC. He attended NC State University and served in the NC State Guard during WWII. In 1995 Dewitt was awarded a pin for 50 years of service to Masonry from Wayne Lodge No. 112. He had been an active member of Winter Park Presbyterian Church for 48 years. After many years of operating a home improvement business in Wilmington, he retired and developed his artistic talents doing glass engraving and woodcarving.
Mr. Bass was preceded in death earlier this year by his wife of 60 years, Ourian Savage Bass; and three brothers, Edison Bass, Wesley Bass and Needham Bass.
He is survived by his children, Carolyn Gillespie and husband Jim of Wilmington, NC, and Gray Bass and wife Mary of Pensacola, FL; his grandchildren, Ben Gillespie of Paris, France, Michael Gillespie of Steamboat Springs, CO, and Daniel Gillespie of Wilmington, NC; three brothers, Walton Bass and wife Emma Deane, and Milton Bass, all of Durham, NC, and Will Bass of Raleigh, NC; and three sisters, Myrtle Hodges of Eden, NC, Allene Tibbles of Streator, IL, and Elizabeth Olson of Washington, NC.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 25, 2002, at Winter Park Presbyterian Church by Rev. Madison M. Highfill.
A reception will be held at the church following the service.
