      Laurie E. Bass

      Laurie E. Bass, 71, of Palatka, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville following a brief illness.

      Mr. Bass was a native of Statenville, Ga. and had been a resident of Palatka for the past 51 years, coming from Key West. He was a 1952 graduate of the Echols County High School in Statenville. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. When he moved to Palatka, he went to work for the former Hudson Pulp and Paper Corp. He later co-owned and operated the Bass and Baker Grocery in Palatka. Later, he and his wife were store managers for Stuckey's in the Southeast U.S. He completed his career as a manager at the Gator Paper Co. in Orlando. Mr. Bass was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Palatka, the Palatka Lodge No. 34, Free and Accepted Masons and the American Legion, Bert Hodge Post No. 45 in Palatka.

      He was preceded in death by his parents, Addie and Sallie Bass; one daughter, Susan R. Lee; two brothers, Roger Bass and Earl Bass; and one sister, Jacqueline Green.

      Mr. Bass is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jessie Sanders Bass of Palatka; two daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and Charlie Barlow of Jacksonville and Connie and Ranny Thomas of East Palatka; one brother, A.C. Bass of Georgia; and two grandchildren.

      Calling hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday (today), at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, at the Masters Funeral Home of Palatka with the Revs. John Miles and Willie McKinnon officiating. The Palatka Lodge No. 34 will conduct Masonic rites. In honor and celebration of Laurie's life a video tribute will be shown during the calling hours. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill East Cemetery with military honors rendered by the U.S. Navy.

      Masters Funeral Home of Palatka is in charge of arrangements.
