Heaven welcomed another legend into the presence of Jesus. Samuel David Bass passed from this life on Good Friday, March 29, 2024 with a host of family members around his bedside at home. David was diagnosed with Parkinson?s Disease about five years ago and prostate cancer about 3 years ago. He ?fought a good fight, ran a good race, and ended well?.
His Homegoing Celebration will be held at Gorsulowsky Funeral Home in Vivian, Louisiana. Family visitation is from 9:30-10:00 A.M. The community visitation is from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. The funeral service is at 11:00 A.M. Graveside service will be held at Vivian Cemetery.
Eddie Briery, senior pastor at City Church of Shreveport, Louisiana will deliver the eulogy. David and Linda are members of City Church.
David was born in Glenmora, Louisiana on November 19, 1943 to wonderful, Godly parents. His father, James Edward ?Pa? Bass, was born in Calcasieu, Louisiana. His mother, Annie Ruth Quarles, was born in Zwolle, Louisiana. David had four siblings: James Edward Bass, Jr., Penny Ruth Bass Viscardis, Robert Earl Bass, and Tommy Suzette Bass Briery. Pa worked in construction most of his life, and he took his family with him on most jobs. This gave the children the opportunity to meet many new friends and to learn to adapt to whatever life came their way.
Football was a huge part of David?s life. He played football at Fair Park High School, and was awarded a full scholarship to Louisiana Polytechnic Institute (now Louisiana Tech University) where he was an All-American nose guard. He loved his teammates.
During his precious life filled with God, love, laughter, dedication, and edifying others, David was a Haughton teacher and girl?s basketball coach, Thiokol Chemical Company Human Resources Director, manager of a copy machine business, Citizens Bank Loan Officer, truck driver, football coach, and owner of Bass Driving School, LLC.
David met Linda, the love of his life and best friend of 48 years, at his sister (Suzie?s) wedding. They lived in Vivian, Louisiana for about 20 years. They loved attending First Baptist Church and going on trips with their Sunday School class members. Friends like Jerry Coon, A. C. Powell, Leonard Briery, and Curtis Viscardis made these times so special. Three children, Cary Dean Tarver, Kristen Ruth Bass, and Emily Renee? Bass were the loves of their lives. They enjoyed traveling, camping, and supporting their children in all of their endeavors.
Then, football began to be a part of David?s life all over again. Linda took a teaching position at Evangel Christian Academy (ECA) and Kristen and Emily attended school there. It wasn?t long before David was a stand-out offensive line football coach with a drawer full of Louisiana LHSAA Football State Championship rings and one national championship. There was a band of brothers like no other with that group of coaches. Football icons Denny Duron, Dennis Dunn, Ronnie Alexander, John Bachman, Chris Tilley, Rick Berlin, Byron Copeland, Romy Cucjen and Johnny Booty were his best friends. He also loved and served the ECA administrators, teachers, and staff with all of his heart. Some of his best friends during this time were Scott Jones, Clint Hortman, Royce Coggins, Del Sowders, Rod Chandler, and Mel Campbell.
A new chapter of his life began after Evangel. He became the owner and operator of Bass Driving School, LLC. Just like every other phase of his life, this was a success story filled with people who loved him because of the way he treated them and made them feel so special.
David leaves a host of family members and friends who will miss his sweet smile, warm laugh, Godly counsel, and thoughtful ways. Linda, his wife of 48 years, is blessed to have a lifetime of good times and memories with her sweet husband. His children include Cary Tarver (Ashley Tarver, wife), their two sons Van Taylor Tarver III, Zachary Lee Tarver (Taylor, wife). His daughter, Kristen Ruth Bass, PA-C, who has taken pristine medical care of him for many years. And, this baby girl, Emily Renee? Bass Nycum (Brent, husband), and their two daughters Ember Ruth and Josie Brooks Nycum have been a blessing to his life. There are no words to express how much we love him and will miss him. But, we know he is in heaven walking on streets of gold and having a fabulous time with his family and friends who went on before him.
David?s family is very close, and they love to celebrate life. His siblings James, Penny, Robert, and Suzie have been blessed with children who are products of their loving, Godly environment. Nieces and nephews include: James ?Tee Dee? Bass (Lisa, wife), Rhonda Bass, Christina Davis (Andy, husband), Chantell Pettingell (Tim, husband), Amy Hook (Daniel, husband), Tammy Graham (Randy, husband), Chris Viscardis (Cindy wife), Craig Viscardis (Robin, wife), Shelli Murphy (J.T., husband), and Eddie Briery. Because of his sweet ways, David was probably the favorite of many of his nieces, nephews, and cousins. There are so many cousins, great nieces, and great nephews that David loved.
Honoring David as pallbearers will be Cary Dean Tarver, Van Taylor Tarver III, Zachary Lee Tarver, Craig Viscardis, Brent Nycum, and Dennis Dunn. Honorary pallbearers are Ronnie Alexander, Clint Hortman, Curtis Viscardis, Chester Hart, and Scott Jones.
Samuel David Bass has lived a long, rewarding, and impacting life as a husband, father, son, uncle, cousin, friend, coach, and neighbor. We will miss you so much, but look forward to seeing you in heaven one day.
The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. ?Bob? Massingil and the nurses and staff at Christus Cancer Center. There are no words to express our gratitude to the Christus Home Hospice nurses, CNAs, and staff. You did a fabulous job!
