Barry W. Bass

CHESAPEAKE - Barry, Chief Emeritus of the Nansemond Indian Tribe passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at home after a long battle of illness; and was received into Heaven by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Lucille Bass and a sister, Debbie Blessing.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; his son, Jesse; two grandsons, Damon and Jordan; nieces, Tracie Davis (Bill) and Wendi Moody and her two children, Jacob and Malia.
Growing up he enjoyed family visits to Elkton, VA and many Wyant family reunions. Before and after school days he helped his grandfather, Chief Earl Bass taking care of the dogs and hogs and working the farm.
As a man, he served as Assistant Chief of the Tribe under his grandfather, Chief Earl; and took over as chief of the tribe after Chief Earl's passing. Barry served as Chief for two decades until he withdrew due to the onset of his illness. He loved and respected his American Indian heritage.
Barry?s whole working career was in the asphalt paving industry. Starting with the Portsmouth Paving Corp. and ending with Asphalt Roads
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel by Rev. Kirk Culpepper. Burial will be private in the Bass Family Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Dept. 300 Kings Hwy. Suffolk, VA 23430.
