Suicide of John Bass
The residents of Webster were shocked to hear of the death of John Bass, Tuesday. He had been in poor health for a long time and for the past few years had suffered such severe pain as to be out of his right mind. His wife, who had been caring for him all night, had just left the room, shortly after 5 o'clock, Tuesday morning, when she heard a noise. Going back into the room she was horrified to find her husband lying on the floor, with a wound in his left side from which blood was gushing. The unfortunate man had arisen and taken the revolver from its place in one of the drawers of a dresser, with which he did the act. Doctors Main and Foster were immediately summoned after noon. Mr. Bass was born in 1852, in Elyria, Mich., coming to Webster, when but a boy. He had been in the grocery business at Lakeside and Webster, but for the past twenty-five years had been in the marble business and for ten years he had been a partner of Ansil Wright. He leaves his widow and one son, Floyd of Buffalo; and one daughter, Fern of Webster; his father, who is ninety-two years old, one brother, James Bass, and three sisters, all of Webster. The funeral will be held Thursday and will be a Masonic funeral, he having been a member of that order for a number of years. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their great sorrow.
