Yule Spirit Proves Aid To Unfortunate Family
The people of Greensboro and surrounding county towns have given generously this year to worthy ogranziations but now they have dug down in their pockets once again here at Christmattime to help a needy man and his homeless family.
A fire leveled the home of Gurley Bass, Negro construction worker, last week and while he and his wife were shopping in Greensboro, three small children, Joe 5, Terry 3, and Lorenzo 2, were left alone in the house. Fire razed the small structure but no before the 5-year-old boy performed an act of heroism.
Joe reaced into the house and brought Lorenzo out from his be while Terry ran to a nearby store for aid. Neighbors reported that the house was so full of smoke when they arrived minutes later that it was impossible to enter and salvage any of the household goods and the family?s holday gifts. They reported that the small boy entered the smoke and flaming house to rescue his brother.
The family is now living with Ollie Rankin, a neighbor, and the thoughtful efforts of Mrs. Cliff Haley of Pleasant Garden will help to brighten their Christmas despite the loss of their worldly possessions.
Mrs. Haley started a drive to help the family and to date has been able to give the Bass household five large boxes of clothing for both children and parents, toys and other small children?s gifts. She reported that she has received several letters and Christmas cards containing small amounts of money.
A lady phoned earlier this week to report that she recently purchased a new stove and that she would be glad to contribute her wood stove if someone could pick it up. A Pleasant Garden citizen has given several pieces of furniture and the family has been placed on the Chamber of Commerce?s Empty Stocking Fund list.
Bass stated that he had a small amount of insurance on the house which he had built six years ago.

Girley R. Bass
LIBERTY ? Girley R. Bass, 57, of Rt. 1 died Monday night in Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.
Funeral will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Brown?s Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be at St. John?s Baptist Church in Climax.
Surviving are sons, Rev. Shelly Bass, Bascum Bass, William T. Bass and Lorenzo Bass of Greensboro; sisters, Mrs. Margie Smith of Greensboro, Mrs. Ollie Bass of Climax; brothers, James Bass of High Point, A.C. Bass of Greensboro, B.N. Bass of Harrisburg, Pa.
The family will be at the funeral home 7-89 p.m. today.
