Bass Jr., 68, who passed away on March 4 in Spokane. Born on April 22, 1941, to Howard Jackson and Barbara Joyce (Corder) Bass in Bellingham, Wash., he attended school and graduated from Bellingham High School in 1959. He was an excellent athlete and exceptional football player. After high school, he attended Western Washington University and continued to play football. His love for the game carried him into the semi-pro football league where he played for seven years. Mr. Bass was a resident of Bellingham and worked for Intelco for 21 years. He moved to Northeast Washington in the late 1980s and purchased a home near Springdale in 1989. While he was working on heavy equipment at the Northwest Alloys plant, he met Carolyn Smithson. They were wed on June 22, 1991, in Springdale. Mr. Bass had often dreamed of living in Alaska and in 1996 he found the opportunity to work in Anchorage, using his welding and knowledge of heavy equipment. Because of his declining physical health, he returned home to Springdale in 1999. He loved to travel and was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for fishing and hunting. He was very active in the Boy Scouts and embraced the memories made camping and hiking with the various troops. He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents. Howard is survived by his wife, Carolyn, at the home; five children, Cathy, Michelle, Dawn, Dan and Greg Bass; his mother, Barbara Bass of Spokane; one sister, Virginia Strachila; one brother, Ken Bass of Arcadia, Okla.; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
