Emilien Bessette, 98 (Includes picture)
MARION – Emilien “Frenchy” Bessette, 97, of Marion died unexpectedly at home Monday, Feb. 26, 2001. He was the husband of Rose (Silva) Bessette; they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in 1999.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Pierre and Augustine (Lelladier) Bessette, he lived in New Bedford and Fairhaven most of his life. He resided in Marion 30 years, including the past 10 years with his daughter. He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church, New Bedford.
Mr. Bessette was a self-employed painter/contractor. In his earlier years, he was head painter at Oyster Harbors Club in Osterville. He also did painting at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port. He also did all of the Star Store in New Bedford in his heyday.
He was an avid saltwater fisherman and was known all over New Enbland. At the Cape Cod Canal, there is an area called Frenchy’s Hole. He was one of the founders of the Backlashes Club. He loved going for rides and sitting by the canal, and loved being with his family.
Survivors include his widow; two sons, Babe Bessette of New Bedford and Ralph Bessette of Wareham; two daughters, Beverlyn B. Ares of Marion and Cheryl F. Nye of Fairhaven; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Armand Bessette and Laurianne Bessette.
His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Lawrence Church, New Bedford. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, New Bedford.
