Cleo Firestone Bass (Picture included)
A memorial service honoring and remembering the life of Cleo Firestone Bass will be held at 2 PM, Monday, January 22, 2018, in the Chapel at South Tulsa Baptist Church. Cleo passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at her home in Bixby. She was 91. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bixby Funeral Service.
Born January 4, 1927, in Seminole, Okla., Cleo was the daughter of Walter and Myrtle (Clem) Firestone. During her early years, Walter worked in the oilfield and the Firestone family lived in several nearby towns where work could be found. She would later become a graduate of Seminole High School.
Following high school, Cleo would attend Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla. Cleo earned a degree in home economics and was also a member of the OBU girls' varsity basketball team. While at OBU, she met fellow student William A. Bass, Jr. or "Bill." The two were married on September 4, 1949. Soon after, Cleo and Bill began their family and would have four children: William III, Gary, Ric and Amy.
Once the children were in junior high and high school, Cleo went back to school herself, completing her Master's Degree at OSU and then beginning a 24-year career with Tulsa Public Schools where she taught middle school science. She and Bill also enjoyed traveling and belonged to a group named the Road Scholars going on nearly 30 expeditions where she was constantly learning about science and nature throughout different regions of the United States.
Cleo loved to garden including planting trees and flowers. An avid orchid lover, she spent many hours in her plant room tending them. She was a member of the Tulsa Orchid Society. Also, Cleo also had a keen interest in needle point and was active in fine tailoring with a group named Third Hand in Tulsa.
A longtime member of South Tulsa Baptist Church, Cleo loved the Lord and His creation. She also loved her family and friends and she will be missed by her survivors who include: her husband and partner of 68 years, Bill Bass of the home; her children: William Bass, III and wife, Mary of Seminole, FL, Gary Bass of Clearwater, FL, Ric Bass of Tulsa, and Amy Bass of Anaheim, CA; a sister, Connie (Firestone) Little of San Francisco; a brother, Larry Firestone of Burnet, TX; and her grandchildren: Katy, Kyle, Lexie, and Chelsea Bass.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; a brother, Lavon Firestone and two sisters, Mary (Firestone) Reynolds and Martha Mae (Firestone) Price.
The family suggests honoring Cleo's memory with a gift to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.
