Man Of High Character
Mr. W. Upshur Bass, Long a Useful Citizen, Passes Away
Was A Brave Soldier
Took Deep Interest in Surviving Confederates ? Funeral This Afternoon

Mr. W. Upshur Bass, of the firm of Simpson, Bass and Company, an old and respected citizen, of Richmond, died at 6 o?clock yesterday morning, after a long illness, which finally developed into pneumonia.
Mr. Bass was born on June 1, 1844, in Chesterfield county, near Petersburg. He served through the Civil War, and was a past commander of George E. Pickett Camp, C.V. He was a member of Company D, First Virginia Infantry, and participated in the battles of Bull Run and Manassas, and in 1862 returned to Richmond, where he organized a city battalion, of which he was a lieutenant. In March, 1863, Mr. Bass married Miss S.E. Redford, of this city, who survives him with several children, as follows: Mrs. J.C. Vurtis and Mrs. S.S> Curtis, of Warwick county, and Mrs. Tyler, of this city; Mr. L.S. Bass of Chesterfield; Mr. W.H. Bass, J. U. Bass and Robert U. Bass, of this city.
Mr. Bass was one of the organizers and charter members of the once famous ?Fourth Street Horribles,? and organization which afterwards developed into the Mozart Club, a musical association. Of this organization, which a few people still remember there is but one member now living ? Mr. J.R. Johnson, of Philadelphia.
Associates Bereaved.
At a meeting yesterday of the Grain and Cotton Exchange, of which Mr. Bass was a member, rive member were appointed a committee to draft resolutions expressing the bereavement of the Exchange at Mr. Bass?s death. Those appointed were Mesrs. N.R. Savage, R.A. Justis, W.F. Richardson, Jr. Charles L. Todd and George T. King. The committee makes its report today at 11:30 A.M.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at 3:30 o?clock from St. Mark?s Church, the services being conducted by Rev. Dr. W.E. Evans, of Monumental Church. Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery.
