Eula Lee McLellan Bass
Eula Lee McLellan Bass SPRING HOPE - Eula Lee McLellan Bass of Spring Hope passed away on July 14, 2009 at home after a lengthy illness. Eula was born in Cumberland County, N.C., the oldest daughter of Christopher Columbus and Mary Ruth Williams McClellan. Eula was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Columbus Claude McLellan; her sister, Johnnie M. Wilson; and her husband of 42 years, Ralph I. Bass. After graduating from Meredith College, Eula taught school in Nash County for 42 years. Her greatest legacy is the approximately 1,100 children that she taught to read and write. Many of her former students returned over the years to thank her for the start that she gave them in their early childhood education. After retiring from teaching, she continued to touch people when she did cooking demonstrations for her husband's company, Bass Farm Sausage. She was an active member of Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church for 68 years. She is survived by her only son, John Ralph Bass of Spring Hope, and four nieces. John wishes to express his sincere appreciation to Peggy Arrington, Jennette Royster, Shirley Martin and Ann Reams for the loving care they gave Eula during her illness. John will be forever grateful for the compassionate care provided to his mother by the skilled staff of Hospice of Nash County. Family will receive friends on Thursday evening, July16, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home in Rocky Mount. A graveside service will be held at the Old Bluff Cemetery in Wade, N.C., on Friday, July 17,, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers gifts may be made in memory of Eula Bass to Gibson Memorial United Methodist Church or Hospice of Nash County.
