He was a native of Portsmouth and was a retired sheet metal mechanic for the Norfolk Naval Base. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Pope Bass; one daughter, Tammy Gray and husband Billy of Chesapeake; one step-son, Billy Bechtel of South Mills; one sister, Delma Jean Hayes of Fort Lauderdale, Fl.; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 28, at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7-8:30 p.m.
