Maddrey Ray Bass
Maddrey Ray Bass, 68, of Galax, Va., native of Sampson County, N.C., passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Maddrey and Lottie Bass of Newton Grove, N.C.; and his brother, Don Bass of Savannah, Ga.
Survivors include his wife, Debby Bass of Galax; his son Richard Bass of Galax; and his daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Austin Turbyfill of Galax.
Ray was a quartermaster in the United States Navy and served aboard the Presidential Yacht, Sequoia, in Washington DC.
He attended N.C. State University and Campbell University.
Ray was on on-air broadcaster in the late 1960s and early '70s with WCLN and WPHY in eastern N.C.
He was a master carpenter and homebuilder for more than 20 years.
In Galax he was the operations manager at WBRF FM 98.1 for more than 16 years.
Ray was an avid Civil War buff, participating in re-enactments all over the south from Gettysburg to Mississippi. He tailored reproduction period uniforming and outfitted companies of re-enactors. Because of his love for history he was considered a historical consultant in his hometown and throughout the re-enacting community.
Ray was licensed to preach the gospel with the Southern Baptist Association.
The family would like to thank Southwest Home Health, Commonwealth Assisted Living and the excellent end of life care given by Mountain Valley Hospice.
High Country Funeral Home of Galax is serving the family.
A memorial will be planned in the spring.
