Benton Bass Dies In Plane Crash Near Percy
Benton Bass, 41, of Steeleville, formerly a resident of this city, passed away at a Red Bud hospital Tuesday morning as a result of injuries received when a small plane in which he was riding, crashed near Percy.
Bass and Dexter Clayton, 38, of Percy, pilot and owner of the small plane were taken to the St. Clement?s Hospital at Red Bud where Clayton is suffering from several broken ribs and possible skull fracture.
The pair had planned to hunt a stray calf that was lost from a herd belonging to Bass and had only left the ground when the motor failed and the craft plunged to the ground.
Bass was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bass of this city and was a graduate of Pinckneyville Community High School where he will be remembered for his basketball ability.
He is survived by his wife and four children, Benny, in the Navy, stationed in Connecticut; Phyllis, Teddy and 7-months old Patsy, all at home.
Services were held at the Schaack Funeral Chapel at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. Immediately following services there, the body was taken to Greenville, Ill., where services are being held at the Baptist Church there at 2:00 (DST) today. Interment will be held at Mt. Auburn Memorial Park in Greenville.

Last Rites Conducted For Russell M. Bass
RUSSELLVILLE, Sept. 21 ? (Spl.) ? Funeral services for Russell Morton Bass, 64, prominent for many years in the insurance business here, were conducted at 3:30 o?clock Monday afternoon at the Richardson funeral home by the Rev. C.G. Sledge and the Rev. E.S. Moore. Burial was in Maple Grove cemetery, Pallbearers were Bennett Bagby, Raymond Page, J.M Perry Jr., John Guion Sr., Ed Hopson and Oren Price.
Mr. Bass died Sunday at the Logan County hospital, where he had been a patient for several months. He had been blind for approximately 25 years.
He was born in Auburn May 6, 1884, a son of Sion and Annetta Carter Bassett.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. E.J. Felts, Russellville, and Mrs. Charles Kyle, Knoxville, Tenn., and a brother, Edwin Bass, Granada, Miss. Mr. Bass was an uncle of Mrs. Inman McLean and Brister Seward, both of Russellville, and Carter Seward, Bowling Green.
