  Notes	Alabama Statistical Register Bibb County Jesse Batts Davie, of West Blocton, representative in the Legislature, 1915, from Bibb county, was born Feb. 23, 1856, on his father?s plantation in Barbour county, Ala.; is the son of Marshall Calhoun and Jane Elizabeth (Bass) Davie; grandson of William and Ruby (Wellborn) Davie, and of Buckner and Ann Elizabeth Bass; great-grandson of Robert Davie and wife, who was a Miss Wellborn; and great-great-grandson of Gabriel Ashburn Davie and his wife, a Miss Bumpas; the former the son of William and Mary (Ashburn) Davie, who immigrated from Cumberland county, England, to America in 1720, and located first on the banks of the Potomac, and later in Person county, N.C. Gabriel Ashburn Davie of Ga. and two sons fought in the Revolutionary War, and for these services they received grants of lands. Numerous descendants of the original immigrants reside throughout the Southern States. Representative Davie received his education at his father?s home, and in Spring Hill Academy, Barbour county. He is a merchant, having passed through numerous clerical and mercantile experiences before going into business for himself. After leaving the farm on which he passed his boyhood he became a clerk in a village store, then successfully chief clerk in the office of the probate judge of Barbour county, clerk in the office of the master of trains in the Central of Georgia Railroad Co., store manager and buyer for the Comer and McCurdy Mining Co., at Dolomite, Jefferson county, and finally entering the mercantile business independently, at West Blocton, on Oct. 3, 1889. He served two consecutive terms as president of the Bibb county jury commission. He is a Democrat; a member of the Missionary Baptist church for forty-eight years, a superintendent of the Sunday School for twenty-two years and for thirteen years moderator of the Bibb county Baptist Association which is composed of thirty-four churches, all of which offices holds at this time (1915). He was married Jan. 7, 1879, on her father?s plantation, to Rebecca Tate, daughter of Jonathan McConico and Rebecca (Woodruff) Thornton, of Barbour county.
