William C. Truman
William C. Truman, a member of one of Otsego's oldest and best known
families, William C. Truman is prominent in Tioga County as president of the
First National Bank. He was born here August 10, 1874, the son of William S.
and Catherine (Stedman) Truman.
William S. Truman, who died in Owego in 1922, for many years cashier
and president of the First National Bank, guided the affairs of the ban
which was established by L. Truman and Brothers in 1836; through his efforts
it is the largest bank in Tioga County. He was born at Owego, educated in the
public schools, and as a young man was associated with L. Truman & Bros. in
various interests they had in Tioga County and elsewhere, and finally
succeeded to the managements of these extensive interests. He was also
president of the Owego Light & Power Company and director of the Champi
Wagon Works. He was a Republican and held numerous public offices. Fraternally
he was affiliated with the Masonic Lodge. His wife was born at Owego and died
in 1917. Their children were: 1. Frank S., died in 1930, as the result of an
automobile accident. He had served as mayor of Owego, treasurer of Tioga
County, and president of the First National Bank. 2. William C., the subject
of this sketch. 3. Adeline Deland, married R.S. Strader, lives at Lexington,
Kentucky. 4. Sarah Stedman, married James R. Steele, lives at Oweg
After his graduation from Owego Academy in 1892, William C. Truman
entered Cornell University, from which he received the degree of Bachelor of
Arts in 1896. His entire business career has been connected with the First
National Bank, having succeeded his brothers as president at the latter
death in 1930.
On June 19, 1900, Mr. Truman married Miss Willia Bassett of Owego, the
daughter of James R. and Mary G. (Gallagher) Bassett. The former was born in
Otsego County and died in 1920. The latter resides here. Mr. and Mrs. Truman
have a daughter, Cathryne Stedman, born in 1902. She is a graduate of Owego
Academy and National Cathedral School at Washington, D.C. She married (first)
John G. Underhill, who served overseas as an officer during the World War. He
was injured while in the service and died in Owego in 1929. Their children
were: Cathryne Truman and William Truman Underhill. Mrs. Underhill married
(second) Floyd J. Buffington. He was an aviator during the World War. They
live in New York City, and have a son, James Allen.
Mr. Truman is a Republican and has served as village supervisor and
trustee. He is a member of the Episcopal Church and belongs to Friendsh
Lodge No. 153, F.& A.M., New Jerusalem Chapter, No. 47, R.A.M., Malta
Commandery, K.T. and Kalurah Temple. A.A.O.N.M.S., and Elk Lodges, Owego
Country Club, and Tioga County Sportsmen's Association.
