Coach George Bass
WINTER HAVEN - George Bass, longtime coach and teacher at Winter Haven High died Saturday (Dec. 11, 2010) after losing a battle with cancer.
Coach Bass was born in Nashville, Tennessee and graduated from Belmont University in 1957. After graduation he spent 2 years in the Marine Corps in Pensacola, FL and Quantico, VA. He then taught and coached at Caverna High School in Cave City, KY and LeGrande School in LeGrande, KY. Then in 1961 he and his family moved to Ft. Pierce, FL where he coached and taught at Dan McCarty High School, which later became Fort Pierce Central where he helped lead the team to State championship for two consecutive seasons, winning the State Championship in 1971. In 1973 the family moved to Winter Haven where he coached football, swimming and girls' softball at Winter Haven High School. He has touched the lives of many people.
He is survived by a son, Pastor Steve Bass (Lake Wales) and two daughters, Frances Lynn Cook, RN (Winter Haven) and Lois Elizabeth Sharpe, W4 US Army (Gatesville, TX), 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons.
Memorial services will be held at Baptist Temple of Dundee, 206 Center St., Dundee, FL., 33835 at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18th.
