Debra Jo Bassett
Debra Jo (Cates) Bassett, aged 72, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2024, at her home with family in Woodland, California. She was born on January 6, 1952, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Jimmie Ray Cates and Betty Jo Reese. She graduated from Santa Clara High School in 1970 and was awarded an AA degree in special education from De Anza College in 1980. She married Randy Bassett on August 5, 1972, in San Jose, California, and worked for the Santa Clara Unified School District as an instructional aide in special education classes for 18 years. She was elected chapter president of the California School Employees Association and served tirelessly until she was physically unable to fulfill her duties. She is survived by her husband, Randy Bassett, son Brian Bassett, stepdaughter Shannon Cox, grandson Malakai Parlette, sisters Brenda Bender and Gayla Biser, brother David Cates, uncles Jimmy and Darrell Reese, aunt Doris Reese, brother-in-law Terry Bassett, and sister-n-law Kathleen Bassett. Debra, or Debbie, as her friends and family called her, was an exceptionally loving and happy person whose presence brought smiles and laughter to those around her. Her love of life and people around her lit any room she was in, and the world is a better place because she was in it. Debbie has been cremated, her remains brought home, and will eventually be interned in the Woodland City Cemetery. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Debbie had multiple sclerosis and received a great deal of help and support from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for many years. Her family asks that donations be made to the National MS Society at www.nationalmssociety.org in her name in lieu of flowers. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to YoloCares, an affiliate of the California Hospice Network. They provided in-home care during Debbie's last few months, and the support and empathy of their staff was of great comfort to the family.
