Lester M. Johnson
Lester Merle "Let" Johnson, 88, of Battle Creek, died October 5, 2006 at
Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. He was born February 25, 1918, the son
of Clyde L. and Mary M. (Johnson) Johnson in Battle Creek. Let graduated
from Battle Creek Central High School in 1938 and from Michigan State
University in 1949 with degrees in agriculture and engineering. Let served
in the U.S. Army during World War II. When he returned from the war he
worked for the Oliver Corporation and then worked for Eaton Manufacturing
Corporation as a packaging engineer and tooling expediter. He retired in
1978. He played minor league baseball and spent two years with the Detroit
Tigers as a catcher. As a basketball player he played against the Boston
Celtics and the Harlem Globetrotters. Let married Marcia R. Keith on March
9, 1946 in Eaton Rapids. She survives. Also surviving are daughers, Nancy
(Mark) Bassett of Bellevue, Cinda Johnson of Tucson, Arizona; six
grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother, Burton Johnson and sisters, Maxine
Fredrick, Katherine Doane and Josephine DeBie. Let was a member of the
American Legion, Post #54, the Disabled American Veterans and served as an
usher at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. He was also a long time member of
the Kiwanis Club and the Battle Creek Athletic Club. Let was inducted into
the Battle Creek Central Hall of Fame in 2004, their charter year and the
Wall of Fame at C.O. Brown Stadium. He volunteered at the Binder Park Zoo,
the Discovery Theatre, the American Red Cross and for Battle Creek Amateur
Sports. He was the co-founder and president of the Old Timers Baseball
Association. Friends may call from 5 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Shaw
Funeral Home, Battle Creek. A memorial service will take place 10:30 a.m.
Thursday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, The Revs. Joy E. Rogers and Chris
Yaw, officiating. Interment of ashes at Fort Custer National Cemetery,
Augusta. In lieu of flowers memorials may go to St. Thomas Episcopal
Church. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home.
