- Newspaper Obit: Ruth May Painter Smallwood Death Results from Sleeping Sickness April 10, 1927 In Spokane occurred the death of Mrs. Thurman Smallwood of Newport,after an extended illness with sleeping sickness. Ruth May Painter was born in Bloomfield, Iowa, April 14, 1893. The family came west in 1901 locating first in the Waterville country, this state, and came to Newport in 1912. She is survived by her husband Thurman, a little adopted daughter, Pauline, her father Chester Painter,and three brothers: Carl, Ola, and Clarence Painter, all of Newport. Burial was beside her mother in Greenwood Cemetery.
