Frances Lorraine Fikes
Surrounded by her children and most of her grandchildren, Frances Lorraine Fikes, 91, left us for a better place on Oct. 22, 2013, the date of the birth of her granddaughter, Kristen Lorraine.
Her gentleness and kindness morphed through her home like a country perfume, as the smells of buttery apple and cinnamon became 'pie' realities. Frances had a heart as big as all outdoors and she chose to think only good things about all people. She was a patient soul with a hearty laugh and giant hug for everyone who graced her and her husband's, Houston (known as Hootie by all), home of 50 years on Marion Anderson Road. Hootie, 92 survives in grief at the loss of his wife of 71 years.
Born to Pearl and Dan Bass on Sept. 27, 1922, in Pine Bluff, Frances was a member of Seventh-day Adventists Church and Pastor Ron Ray was by her side in prayer just hours before her passing. Together, Frances and Hootie raised all three of their children in Hot Springs and their son, Jack Fikes, married for 47 years to Lynn, and their daughter Lola, married for 11 years to Richard Hartsell, still reside close by the family home. The oldest daughter Lyndia resides in Florida with her husband of 35 years, Tom Oyler.
Frances's love for cooking and baking was only superseded by her love of family and she left grandchildren, Ryan, Kristen, Boomer (Lyndia and Tom), Paul, Jaclyn (Lynn and Jack ) Bryan, Angela, and Jon (Lola and Richard); 15 grandchildren and a great-grandchild longing for one more of her 'divine' cakes or pies. Preceding her death, Frances lost her beloved brother, Dan (Tick) Bass.
A viewing will be held by the family at the Davis-Smith Funeral Home at 2205 Airport Road in Hot Springs from 6-8 p.m. today.
Pastor Ray will preside over a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Saturday Oct. 26, 2013, at Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel on Airport Road (Highway 70) in Hot Springs followed by a graveside service at Memorial Gardens also in Hot Springs.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
