Guy Bass
Guy Bass, 69, died June 11, 2009, at his home in Fort Meade.
Born March 22, 1940, in Milton, Mr. Bass was a lifelong resident of Fort Meade. He was a U.S. Navy Vietnam War veteran, serving from 1958 to 1973 and retiring as a 1st class petty officer.
He also was a retired captain with the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Beginning his career with the Polk County Sheriff's Office in 1973, he was hired as a corrections officer and was promoted to captain in 1988.
His career with the PCSO included serving as a reserve III detention lieutenant; being the first detention reservist of the PCSO; serving as sergeant in detention and lieutenant in detention at the main jail and then the annex; serving as captain in detention at the Central County Jail and South County Jail; creating and running the tent city located inside of the Central County Jail compound; and training as an emergency medical technician and breathalyzer operator.
From 1998 to 2007, he was a certified inspector of the Florida Model Jail with Standards County Jail Inspection Team. During that time, he inspected jails in Manatee, Osceola, Orange, Sarasota, St. Lucie, and Volusia counties.
He was a Protestant.
Mr. Bass was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Wingland.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra M. Bass of Fort Meade; three sons, Guy Francis Bass of Fort Meade, Carl N. Bass of Lakeland, and Dave C. Bass of Bartow; two brothers, Roy Bass of Bartow and David Bass of Fort Meade; three sisters, Annette Pierce of Fort Meade, and Helen Raines and Doris Dyal, both of Arcadia; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Sunday, June 14, 6 to 8 p.m., Hancock Funeral Home, Fort Meade.
Funeral: Monday, June 15, 2 p.m., First United Methodist Church of Fort Meade, with Rev. Bill Ivey, Rev. Marvin Pittman, and Rev. Christopher Custead officiating.
Interment: Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Meade.
