      Farmer Killed On The Rail
Elias Bass Run Over By Passenger Train Sunday Evening

Elias Bass, of Bower?s Hill, Norfolk county, was run over and instantly killed Sunday night by the incoming train, which reaches this city at 5:20 o?clock.
Bass, who is an Indian, has been engaged in farming at Bower?s Hill for a number of years. He was one of the largest shippers of truck from that section, and did a prosperous business with Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia markets. He was widely known.
The body was taken to the undertaking establishment of Sturtevant and Specht, in Fourth street, South Portsmouth, where it was prepared for burial.
Mr. Bass had been out for a short walk with his little daughter just before the accident occurred, and, becoming tired, he seated himself on a cross-tie and had apparently fallen asleep.
When the engineer saw him sitting on the track as his swiftly moving train bore down on him, he blew the whistle sharply, but Bass paid little heed to it. When it was seen that he made no efforts to save himself, the emergency brakes were applied, but too late. The engine struck him, breaking his neck. Reports to the contrary notwithstanding, his body was not mangled.
