Georgetown Man Killed in Crash on Bridge
GEORGETOWN ? Charles Ellery Bass, screen room operator at International Paper Company, of Rt. 3 near Georgetown died Monday night in a flaming automobile crash on the Sampit River Bridge.
The automobile in which he and a companion were riding stalled on the bridge and his companion got out to flag traffic. When an oncoming car rammed the stalled car from the rear, it was immediately engulfed in flames.
The second automobile was thrown into the path of a third automobile by the force of the impact. None of the passengers in the other automobiles were seriously injured, though they were admitted to the Georgetown Hospital for observation.
Funeral services for Mr. Bass will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Officiatin will be the Rev. Julius Mahlon Kirkland, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Penny Royal Memorial Gardens. Members of the National Guard will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Bass, son of Charles Addison Bass and Mrs. Belle Gardner Bass was born in Fairmont, N.C. on Jan. 29, 1928. He came to make his home in Georgetown in 1947 and worked with International Paper Company. Mr. Bass had been a member of the National Guard for the past 16 years. He was a Baptist.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Myrna Hope Roberts Bass of Georgetown; his son, Charles Ellery Bass Jr., also of Georgetown; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Bass of Santra Ana, Calif.; two brothers Marvin Leo Bass of Augusta, Ga. and John Durham Bass of Santra Ana, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Mills, Mrs. Carolyn Haynes and Mrs. Barbara J. Gee, all of Santa Ana, Calif. and Mrs. Lavenia Beaulieu of Wilmington, N.C. and several nephews and nieces.
