1850's he went with an ox team to Red Bluff, Tehema County,
California, where he conducted a large sawmill. About 1882, he
returned with his family to Andrews, Indiana. Leaving his family
in Indiana, he went to Arkansas with his nephew, John L. Howard.
Together they bought a large tract of timberland in Craighead
County. Failing health caused him to sell his interest in a ranch
in Lonoke County, Arkansas to his nephew and return to Andrews,
Indiana, where he remained until 1891. Because of continuing ill
health, he sold his home in Andrews, Indiana and went with his
family to South America in 1891.
